Thomas W., LPC

Position: Director of Counseling

Hometown: Kerrville, TX

How long have you been with Schreiner? Where were you prior? I have been here 4 years. Prior, K-Star out-patient counseling center for 3 years and prior to that I was with Schreiner U. for 4 more years.

What do you like best about Schreiner University? I love the mission of the University, the family atmosphere, and what a great setting for a University.

What do you like best about your position at Schreiner? I like the fact that I get to provide a safe, open and confidential opportunity for students to communicate with someone about all the facets of their life and I like to see the success stories that sometimes come from that open communication. I also like working in a workplace that feels like a home.

What Schreiner events do you enjoy? I love the beginning of each new academic year. There is so much excitement in the air.

Favorite food: Mexican Food!!!

Favorite books: Anything by J.D. Salinger, Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follett; Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, JOHN BERENDT; The Hot Zone, RICHARD PRESTON. Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien.

Favorite vacation spot: Colorado: great cycling or skiing, Grand Cayman.

What do you like to do during your weekends? Be with my family and get a ride in… or maybe two…or three…

Is there any particular advice you would give to students?
Several little bits of advice. Encourage yourself, don’t discourage yourself. Learn to complement yourself on everyday tasks. Don’t compare your life to others -- remember, every life is different. It’s never too late to do something and it’s never too early to start doing it. Take responsibility for your past mistakes and most importantly learn from them. Maintain a balance in your life between career/academics/social/recreational/spiritual. Nothing that hasn’t been said before; but the older you get, the more you realize the truths in them.
