Mark Tuschak

Position: Vice President of Advancement

Hometown: Many, I was an Air Force brat, born in Taipei, Taiwan, lived overseas for about 10 years, and went to high school in San Antonio.

How long have you been with Schreiner? Where were you prior? I've been at Schreiner since April 2002. During my 20 year career I have worked at Texas A&M University, University of Texas at Austin, Southwest Texas State University, and the American Cancer Society.

What do you like best about Schreiner University? Schreiner the community. I like how we care for each other and the mutual respect we have whether or not we agree with a person's position or point of view.

What do you like best about your position at Schreiner? Being part of a team that is helping to shape Schreiner in a time of change is very exciting to me. I predict that we will look back on this period in Schreiner's history and marvel at how we were able to keep the heart of Schreiner and develop the university into a very well thought of place of learning.

What Schreiner events do you enjoy? I enjoy the various lecture series, especially the ones that feature our faculty. I always learn something new, am always amazed at the talent of our faculty, and even if I don't feel like attending I'm always glad I did when I leave.

Favorite food: Good food! I'm a food snob, and I like everything from good home cooking (my wife's chicken and dumplings), to good bar-b-que (judged by the ribs and the sauce), to fine dining (like Le Reve in San Antonio ). My comfort food is Chinese food. I never get tired of Chinese food.

Favorite books: Those who know me will laugh if I answer this question because I read more pulp than books, but my favorite book I ever read was The Ugly American.

Favorite vacation spot: There is not a vacation spot I don't like, but if push came to shove I'd find a secluded beach somewhere.

What do you like to do during your weekends? Work in the yard, coach my daughter's softball team, go to the ranch to mess around, fiddle with projects.

Is there any particular advice you would give to students? Don't fear failing, don't be afraid of admitting mistakes, and always be willing to ask for help -- by doing so you will continually learn and get better, and you will gain the respect of others.
