What IS a wireless network?
A wireless network
is a computer network that does not communicate through network cables.
A wireless network uses radio waves to transmit and receive data and
so enables you to be
more mobile than a regular ethernet connection... you can be connected
to the Internet indoors or outdoors.
Where can I use the wireless network?
Click here for the SUNSPOT coverage
map. Also, look for SUNSPOT banners and stickers posted around
campus to mark wireless zones.
What does "SUNSPOT" mean?
SUNSPOT
is the name of Schreiner University's Wireless Network = "Schreiner
University Network Spot".
Will the university supply
wireless cards?
Yes! The wireless network card is included in your
tuition.
WHERE can I get my wireless card?
Students now get their wireless cards (or register their card if they have their own) from Searle Crate in the computer lab (Dickey 112) Mon-Fri 8-4.
What if I'm running Windows 95?
Wireless will still work however you will need to have
the Windows 95 CAB files installed in your computer or have the Windows
95CD. Your machine should also have motherboard supported USB ports.
I have a MAC. Will wireless work
with it? We have run across some older Macs that are not wireless friendly.
Make sure your machine has an airport card slot available. We have
the airport card and adapter available but your machine has to support
it.
What types of wireless cards are available?
There are 2 types of cards: PCI cards for laptops and
USB for desktops.
May I bring my own wireless card to campus?
Yes; however you must register your wireless card through
the Computer Lab.
Contact Searle Crate for more info.
What type of wireless card do I need?
We recommend the Orinoco 80211-B WiFi by Lucent Technologies.
Is there anything that can mess up my wireless
connection?
YES! Devices that operate in 2.4 Ghz band interfere
with our wireless network. Examples: 2.4 Ghz cordless phones . . .which,
by the way, have been BANNED from the university (so plz. leave your
2.4 Ghz phone at home!)
What if I can't get wireless connectivity where
I want it?
Stay tuned for exciting wireless updates . . .
our wireless network is constantly growing, and coverage is added
all the time.
How fast is the wireless connection?
The wireless network operates at a 2 to 11 MB signaling
rate, based on the size & source of the file, network traffic,
and your proximity to the access point.
What if I have trouble w/my setup & connection?
Call the campus-wide help desk number:
(830) 792-7344 (or extension 344)
They are trained to help you.
If they can't figure out the answer, they'll find someone who
can help.
